DIY Tequila Infusions

By | Tequila Infusions | No Comments

We’re known for many great things here at the Drunken Worm like our Baja inspired tacos, specialty cocktails or for being Kansas City’s home for infused tequilas. We do a few things exceptionally well, and infusing tequila is one of our cornerstones.

We start off by selecting our tequila for our infusions. We choose Olmeca Altos Tequila for a variety of reasons. Not only is it a Gold Medal winner, it’s aroma has herbal notes of cooked agave, yet very aromatic and fruity. Then you tip your glass back and get invited with sweet and citric flavors. Its well balanced and long lasting aftertaste make Olmeca Altos the perfect tequila to start infusing.

DIY Directions

1. Create & Mix

Get your creative juices flowing. Can you think of any flavor of tequila you really want to try? Maybe it’s a combination of flavors you desire. Pretty much anything edible can be used to infuse your tequila. Once you have your flavor in mind, find the freshest ingredients you can and start to prepare your infusion. You do this by simply adding your ingredients to a clean glass container or mason jar, if you are looking for something handy around the house. Pints work great for sample infusions, while quarts are perfect for proven and tested flavor pairings.

Our staple flavors are; Mango, Watermelon, Poblano Pepper, Strawberry Pineapple, and Thai Chile Lemon Grass. Once your ingredients are inside your container, slowly pour your base tequila over your ingredients ensuring they are fully submerged. Tighten your containers lid or mason jar and set in a cool, dark place.

If you’ve thought of flavor combinations and just aren’t sure what will taste good, come grab any of our traditional infusions to get your creative juices flowing.

2. Shake and Sip

Drunken Worm Tequila Well

Drunken Worm is home to 120+ tequilas. Come in, sip and stay awhile.

Throughout the next few days shake your infusion to elicit all of the flavor out of your ingredients and for it to be accepted by your base tequila. Taste your infusion daily, until you’re satisfied with the flavor. Flavor is subjective, your infusion can have just a hint or it can knock your socks off, whatever your palate desires can be achieved through just a bit of practice and know how.

3. Wait and Wait

The internet is filled with advice on how long you should infuse your tequila. Well we’ve figured out that its done when it taste good, and only you know how long that takes! Now in house we infuse our pairings from anywhere to 4 to 7 days depending upon ingredients. Poblano Pepper comes out before Mango to ensure it’s still drinkable, trust us that stuff gets HOT! Fresh ingredients will be “ready” before dried ingredients as the tequila takes longer to draw out the flavors, they can handle longer infusion dates, up to as long as a few months in the container.

Reminder that the taste can change quickly during the infusion period so we recommend shaking and sipping consistently throughout the process to ensure a tasty infusion you’ll want again and again. Infusing for a shorter period with a higher quantity of ingredients will aid a more straightforward and less bitter flavor. Whereas, longer infusion periods with smaller quantities of ingredients will be more complex and can exhibit unpleasant flavors and bitterness if you’re not careful.

4. Strain And Filter

After your waiting, shaking and sipping period is over and you’ve come to your acquired taste it’s almost time to enjoy all your hard work. The last step to any great infusion is straining and filtering. Take your container filled with your now infused tequila and ingredients and strain through a kitchen strainer. Once you’ve filtered any solids out with the kitchen strainer its time to filter through cheesecloth, coffee filters will even work, to refine your infused tequila.

5. Fill, Drink, Repeat

Bottle your infusion, seal the lid tightly, label and store. Take your infusion out on a rainy day, a bad day, or any day for that matter pop the top and sip and enjoy! The ultimate pairing is infused tequila and a Baja inspired menu and nobody in Kansas City has the Drunken Worm beat there!

Day of the Dead

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

We’re all familiar with Halloween in America, but did you know our neighbors to the south celebrate a different holiday? Their holiday, Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead, is held during the same time period as Halloween. However, it extends from October 31st to November 2nd. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends, to pray for and remember friends and family members who have passed away.

October 31st we’re offering FREE face painting to anyone who wants to get in the spirit from 5 to 7PM. Our friend and local artist Christopher Stubbs from Surreal Tattoo will be on hand to create works of art on you or your child’s face. These works of art are obviously temporary, unlike his normal artwork.

November 1st we have DJ Lee coming in to play live music, yes he’s a musician; no DJ is his actual name. If you enjoy live music the Drunken Worm is the place to be Saturday Night!

November 2nd you can’t forget your hometown Kansas City Chiefs are playing the New York Jets at Noon. We’ve got quite the loyal fan base here in West 39th Street and we’d love for you to join us for the game.
